This is an exposure from the top of Mauna Kea at almost 14,000' above sea level looking south with the Milky Way Galaxy shining brightly in the night sky.

Out of this world!
I'm amazed that such a long exposure at such a high iso speed isn't ruined by digital noise. Is there some sort of other process at work Scott to either prevent this or to counter and clean it up? Or is the Nikon D3 some sort of miracle machine?
Whatever - the result is absolutely magnificent, this deserves high recognition today!

@Curly: I like to think it is a combination of equipment, planning, experience, proper exposure, and a bit of processing expertise. And yes the d3 has a fantastic high iso low noise sensor, and with a 2.8 wide angle lens at high elevation you can pull in a lot of light.

Just a stupendous image, Scott! This shows the mastery of the D3 and the "operator" behind the shutter... This image is what dreams are made of. I cannot recall seeing ant image of the Milky way that has so such a combination of color, interest-retaining elements, precision, focus, clarity, and most of all, drama!! . The overall light throughout the frame is truly out of this world...the entire composition is , and I am not being corny here, truly a spiritually nurturing experience. Bravo, Scott....and best of luck to you all at Tahoe.
