Morning Mist

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 12 November 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Galen Rowell spoke of the importance of using edges in photography. In an attempt to improve my own photography, I will often look for edges that I can incorporate into my compositions.

In this photograph there are many edges that came into play. This image includes the edge of morning light - Dawn, foreground and mid-ground edges of the rolling hills, and the edge of the fog. Also, In this image, the colorful light is created by another edge- the front edge of an approaching storm.

Beautiful color palette Scott. I also look for edges in my search for images. I saw a video once of Rowell leading a group of workshop students in the Berkeley Hills. He found a shadow line and had them work that scene - some really cool images resulted. Great lesson and image!

Your California landscapes offer you many earthly 'edges' and then you add this active sky - what a wonderful presentation!

Simply a wonderful shot, Scott! Strong individual elements made stronger, even as they are muted, by the mist. Love the way, via the diffusion, the intense reds transformed the less evident blues to produce the purple cast. Fantastic light play... beautifully captured... thanks for sharing.

Your text is so descriptive Scott. Thank you for those words. I think this has elements of ethereal moods, but the colors in the sky relieve that fear and move the spirit into more of a positive mode. The edges that you speak of and have so masterfully conveyed here have EVERYTHING to do with that restoration of positive emotion. This image is so wonderfu, Scott...of course, you always have me when you post an image of the rolling hills and oak trees...but this is the masterpiece of light, emotion and spirit....Your work is so absolutely wonderful Scott...thank you very much for sharing this with all of us!

the edges that you describe make great subtle lines within this composition! i really like the very soft and diffused lighting resulting from the great amount of mist present in the air! the colour stand out well in the sky and the shadowy silhouettes make me really focus into the shot to find and discover the trees and landscape hidden within...
