Dirty Gears MTB - Fort Ord Race

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 20 July 2010 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

I had the job to shoot the Fort Ord Dirty Gears Mountain Bike Race on July 17, 2010. I found a location where the competitors had to work their way down a fairly technical downhill section with some good rocks and ruts. The sun was up high and created a bit of a challenge with the deep shadows. I used center weighted metering for the exposures during the race and for most of the exposures I went +1/3 to try and make sure I had good light on the faces of the competitors. The hope in this situation is to not totally blow out the highlights!

Great to see your sports work once in a while Scott. Perfectly composed, lit and the right choice of focal length. I'm not supposed to be in the office but snuck in while Beri is running errands. Trip went great but I'm shutting it down for a few days. Good to be home!

Looks as much a challenge for you as it is for the competitors, that bright light seems to have been well controlled by the camera.

High sun or not, you did great! I love it. Wonderful colours and I really like the expressions on their faces. A superb action shot. Silly question, but did you use a flash? I really struggle with faces and shadows when the light is bright.

Scott great photo! I like the focus on the guy in front with the softer background but still plenty of detail. Will we see any of these shots in print? Looks like a great event.

@steve loos: Thanks for the comments Steve. When I shoot these events they are primarily for web use for the event organizer and for the purchase by the individual participants.

Good job handling the lighting challenge. I like how you got that front wheel of the lead rider just off the ground.
