The last rays of sunlight reach out just before the Sun dips below an Oak Covered Hill in the California countryside.

Your settings were perfect to capture this beautiful sunburst ... !

Andrea from Regina, Canada

Spectacular colour. Is a sunburst better with a higher f-stop? That might explain why I can't capture a good one (the highest my camera goes is f-8).

3 Jul 2010 4:34pm

@Andrea: Yes, stopping the aperture down, (or shooting at a higher f-ratio number) will give you a better chance of a sunburst. I get the best diffraction patterns when only a portion of the Sun's disk is shining through the edge of a hill or through tree branches.

After "working" with the sun a bit, I know it is really difficult to get it halfway decent. The piece you have here is WAY beyond that. The control of the sun's near glow, then the next phase going out and then the colors - all of this make up a truly beautiful and amazing piece. The trees are awesome in contrast. Bravo sir and happy 4th - I love this.

Simple effective composition, and you know me well enough that when I say simple that is a huge compliment as we all tend to clutter our frames with too much information. Distilling a composition down to its bare essentials makes it far stronger IMO and you accomplished that task with this image. Our oak tree-lined rolling hills are so beautiful. This image makes one stop and realize the beauty that surrounds this area we call home. Hope you are enjoying your holiday with your family.
