Over the Lip!

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 15 June 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I had the job to shoot a mountain bike race on Saturday - the Dirty Gears Series at Harvey Bear Ranch in San Martin, California. Here is an image of one of the competitors in the Elite Division coming over a rise on a downhill section of the race.

I scouted this section of the track a 1/2 hour prior to the start of the race and set up knowing that the competitors would have a good chance of getting air over this section of the course. The challenge was, I couldn't see them before they arrived and went airborne. I would pre-focus on a spot ready for the rider to show up and then shoot fast with a shutter speed that would freeze the action of the rider in the air. I also used a monopod to stabilize the camera and allow me to pan through a series of exposures, smoothly, as the rider was passing by.

The immediate is manifestly as well a technique as kept silent mastery perfectly. I like very much, it is cheerful, alive, colored!

Good shot, you got a nice bit of air there. Sounds like a tough one when you couldn't see the bikers before they came over the lip, a great spot for the shots but must have been tricky. It's at times like that you need someone to wave a flag to indicate someone is coming.

Airborne! I just thought you should know that 'Monterey John' Wilson and I just met for the first time - over a cup-of-joe along The Embarcadero. We got talking about AM3 and that instantly brought your name into the conversation. You were unanimously voted the most impressive artist of our gifted tribe. John Maslowski, Evelyne Dubos, Hugo Poon, and OrdinaryImages Jerry are all worthy of the title - but what sets you apart is your willingness to be up at any hour - in any weather - at any elevation - to capture the best of life's light.

That has to be very hard to predict if there is any width to the paths they ride. They can shoot up and out in a variety of ways. Your study of the terrain got you the shot. To know you had no warning even more of a test. Great action here!
