Emerald Bay - Lake Tahoe

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 1 June 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

A late season snowstorm brought a cold snap to the Sierra Nevada Range and provided an opportunity to photograph a sunrise from Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe. The heavy snowfall provided a unique view with the sun being further north(only 3 weeks from Summer Solstice), the Sun was aligned closer to the center of Emerald Bay. The storm also left some nice clouds in its wake!

Now there's a postcard. Beautiful shot, Scott. This Emerald Bay scene is much like the Tunnel View scene have millions of images of--incredibly beautiful and incredibly over-shot. It takes something like this to remind me that great conditions trump everything and there still are shots worth taking no matter how many we already have. Wish I'd have been there for this. :)

You weren't kidding when you said you nailed a good sunstar - way to go! I'm posting a similar image tomorrow but from earlier in the session when the warm light illuminated the lake. My sunstar had too much flare to seriously consider showing. Glad we got up early - it was worth the effort!

What I wouldn't give to be a 'fly on your shoulder' on one of these outings you fellows go on.
I'm just thankful I can see the results of your combined efforts! Bravo, Scott.

A great vantage point to capture this sunrise. Beautiful color in the sky is reflected nicely on the water's surface. Good capture of the crepuscular rays from the sun as well!

As Gary commented, this is a different view of this iconic location. The snow, color of the sky, and the sunstar takes it over the top.

The point of view is lovely and the tones make it amazing. Contast between the sunny and warm colors in the sky and water and the snow covered trees makes the shot unique.

Haha, did you and Don Smith plan to post your photos on the same day? I like things about each of your photos - one of the great things about photography - the image and its feeling depends on the photographer.
