Jeffrey Pine - Sierra Nevada Crest

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 30 May 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

A fresh snowfall surrounds a group of Jeffrey Pines that reach for the last warmth of sunlight before night sets in. This small grouping survives along the crest of the Sierra Nevada Range. These trees, in this specific location, endure severe winters with winds well over 100 mph during strong winter storms. The trees are anchored in the rocks with their roots and grow sideways due to the heavy winds along the crest of the High Sierra Nevada Range. Image taken May 28, 2010.

J'aime la neige qui cotoie cet arbre encore vert. Belle composition.

I like the touch of HDR-processing here. Not to much, just enough to make it an enthralling picture. Good shot and compo.

@larans: No hdr on this one. It was taken in Soft even light after the sun was behind the ridge.

Tamara from Aarschot, Belgium

What an extraordinary tree ! I completely agree with Larans's comment, the HDR treatment was the perfect choice to enhance the details of this beautiful capture ! Great work :)

Did you light up the tree by overexposure or with a flash? It's a great composition and beautufl with the late snow!!

The shape of the tree allows for a static image to be transposed into a flowing scene with awesome visual movement. Well captured Scott. This is an incredible location with so much to photograph in every direction. If I wasn't with you, I'd never believe this was captured three days before June!

Jeffrey Pines are new to me and so exquisitely beautiful, Scott. Your light was magnificent, and I like Don's comment about when it was taken - nearly unbelievable.

interesting capture this one - there is a certain surreal feel to it with the bluish tones - especially the ones on the branches... this feels very still and very rigid and frozen!

This is a beautiful shot. The tree is so intriguing, it looks positive wind blown. I would images the elements it must battle on a daily basic. This photo is so surreal.

A unique composition with the pines angled as they are. And here I thought you just tilted the composition. ;-) Beautiful color captured in the twilight and great textures as well. Thanks for the narrative.
