Mokelumne Wildnerness

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 26 May 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

The Mokelumne Wilderness area as viewed from Carson Pass along the crest of the High Sierra. This image was taken in late afternoon and was a short hike above Highway 88 and Carson Pass. I was drawn to the colorful lichen that clung to the boulders and rocks in this area.

I have just uploaded a new podcast - A hike through Big Basin Redwoods State Park to Berry Creek Falls.

A superb shot of the mountain, Scott. The reddish lichen against the whites of the snow is a great play of color...well done!

Aux Etats Unis comme en France, la montagne est magnifique, c'est un bonheur que de se trouver face à elle et d'en découvrir et photographier les multiples facettes. J'aime beaucoup.

How beautiful the lichen is, especially in contrast to the snow's bright whites!
We remember going west over the Donner Pass in a white-out in mid-May. Rt. 80 was closed by the time we got down! :D

You are well ahead of me in your edits Scott - I haven't even looked at images from this location yet. I will say you captured exactly what you were describing to me. I really like the little desert scrub in the bottom right of the frame. A real contrast of the harshness and softness of this area - simply beautiful!

You're right - the red of the lichen is so unusual in a snowy landscape- well done.

Excellent shot, Scott! The close up of the rock makes me feel like I am getting a look at what the rocks of the far away mountains are like- Really ties the two elements together!

Another great scene from your travels that you've shared, I lovethe congrats with the snow on the high peaks to the growth down below. It feels refreshing looking at it. The humidity is starting to kick in now in Tokyo and the only respite here is a cold beer in an air-conditioned bar (where I am just now). Wouldn't mind swapping the bar for the mountains...after a couple more anyway.

Cheers

A great panoramic shot and I love how "raw" and "undisturbed" this scene looks. The evergreens seen in the middle left really help establish the enormous scale.
