Yosemite Alpen Glow - Last Light

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 13 January 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This is probably my favorite image from a recent trip to Yosemite in December. From my perspective, it includes everything about landscapes that I have a passion for - Clouds, Snow, Mountains, Alpen Glow, and an amazing display of light!

I was standing there with two good friends, Don and Mike, and the three of us were along different sections of the same riverbank working in earnest to capture this scene. My feet were wet and freezing! Fortunately Mike had the foresight to bring an extra pair of socks and he loaned them to me prior to this shot! I was able to slip dry socks on and return with warm feet prior to this last bit of Alpen Glow light.

I mentioned in a previous blog post that the color and light disappeared from El Capitan completely for about 5 minutes - but you could see it coming back strong - red and pink - on the peaks further to the east. It then re-appeared on El Capitan for about 5 minutes just before disappearing for the night. But it was a great display for a few minutes!

I agree with you Scott, this is the best shot of the series! I can also empathize with the frozen feet and hands; but somehow it's all worth it when we get results like this.... ;-))

Beautiful scene, Scott. And that's the light that causes Horsetail Fall to turn crimson--you just have to see it to believe it. Really nice. (And Mike is always the guy who comes through with whatever we've forgotten, isn't he? It seems like not only does he remember everything, he must also bring two of everything.)

This still amazes me. You would think that locals living there.. you know in past history might have built some monument to catch the light or even used this place for ceremonies because it's just magic.

Your friend Mike sounds a lot like 'my' Mike - always the ready Scout. I'm glad he helped you through this shoot so you could be rewarded with this beauty.
I never see El Capitan w/o thinking of the men we saw hanging hammocks to sleep in overnight. I was harshly awakened in the night by Mike's flailing arms when he dreamt he was falling! :D

Another amazing shot, no wonder it's one of your favourites from your recent trip. The light on the face of the mountain is just amazing, that in contrast with the snowy river is great. Well worth the wet cold feet.

Always a joy to come see your work. Would really love to see you shoot some medium format someday.

I really like your composition here...You've really captured the intensity of that last bit of color on El Cap. You've given those socks so much press, I'm going to have to find them and get them bronzed !
