Big Sur Tidepool

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 9 January 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

A sunset as viewed from a tidepool along the Big Sur coastline of California.

It is often difficult to capture the full range of light with a digital camera sensor especially at sunset - however, this particular evening along a section of Big Sur, Mother Nature provided a great mix of high clouds with soft diffused light which helped to reduce the total dynamic range of the scene. This allowed for complete capture of the scene with one shot - I like that!

I have just uploaded a short Podcast of this Big Sur Adventure - SEE BELOW FOR LINKS

I not only hope one day I can see such beautiful scenery as you share here but that I'm blessed to be able to photograph it well too. **I'm a podcast fiend so I think I'm gonna have to DL yours.

I know that spot, I have one of my own coming up in a few days. however, your processing is just killer. you should teach a class in this ... if you are willing to reveal your secrets.

Les couleurs de tes photographies sont toujours splendides, douces et en même temps fortes. C'est très beau

Great light and great reflections, I like very much the rich variety of tones and also the spectaular coast of Big Sur. It's the Paradise as you show it to us.
It's not strange that Hery Miller decided to live there :)

Just wonderful Scott! The sky is like a watercolor painting...And the reflections tie the land and sky together so well...Plus I love the little "rivulet" of water on the left that takes me from the tide pool into the sea and sky. A breathtaking image!

I like the water, specifically, in this shot. It contains the details of the sky reflection, as well as the underwater rocks. It's interesting.

I like the attention to the foreground instead of just a shot of the waves crashing in. Lovely.

Beautiful! This is definitely something you'd want to hang on your wall.

Don Smith from California, United States

I love this image Scott, I know you had been wanting this for some time and you have certainly captured it beautifully. Unfortunately, if you have been checking tide charts, the second low tide of the day is getting well outside sunset time, so this scene may not be available again until next fall.

Barbara from Oakland, United States

Just lovely, Scott! I like the tones of the oranges and blues...quite nice. I see Don's comment with disappointment - a friend invited me to her Carmel home this week to shoot the low tide at sunset, but I will be in Mexico - well, that's not so bad - but I'll have to wait to next fall?? Bummer!

A glorious shot! This is a true testament of 'being at the right place at the right time' - the most important factor, however, is to be able to recognize it and capture it skillfully. That, Scott, makes you a genius! :-)

Nicely captured Scott! It almost looks like something from Lord of the Rings...... ;-)
