Winter Solitude

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 27 December 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I had taken an image of this Oak Tree last year during a cold winter storm and I could not pass up the opportunity to shoot it again this year. I had taken last year's image with my wide angle lens and standing close - this year I stood back a distance and used my 70-200mm lens and tried to get a feeling of the scene with a bit more foreground snow.

This tree grows on top of a hill and stands out against its surroundings - even in the middle of a snowstorm. If you look near the center of the image there is a small patch of green - which is a small section of mistletoe on the tree.

Scott, this is just lovely in its simplicity. I would love to see some vignetting in the corners to keep my eyes focused on the lovely oak tree.

@Barbara: Thanks for the comment - I added just a touch around the edges and re-loaded the image.

This is a fabulous photograph, Scott. In many ways, it is like a gorgeous ink drawing. I had to drag it into PS and blow it up a bit to find the green. I've heard a lot about the 70-200mm having vignetting problems on full frame cameras. I certainly don't see any with your shot. Scott, I can't begin to tell you what a gift that you and your photographs have been for me.

FANTABULOUS! What more can I say? We have lots of mistletoe in our Florida oaks also, but w/o the snow, it doesn't create such a beautiful image.
