Grizzly Falls - Kings Canyon Scenic Byway

Posted by
Scott F. Schilling (Highland, United States) on 23 November 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Grizzly Falls is a great waterfall located along the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway in Kings Canyon National Park, California. Grizzly Falls is very close to the road due to the steep canyon walls. The walk is not far from the parking lot - However, it is a long and windy road!

This is so very beautiful Scott! The delicate color and fine detail along with the perfect motion makes for a fine composition!*****

Beautiful water patterns. So many people cut off their waterfalls before the lovely patterns they make at the bottom. So, you captured all I would have wanted! Love it!

Hey I know this place! You forgot to tell the part about what happened when you decided to cross the creek... Just giving you a bad time on a Monday morning. Hope your trip was successful, I look forward to seeing the images.

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

Beautiful image Scott! I love the soft angel-hair water over the craggy rocks....Excellent framing of the scene, too, with bits of green in all the right places! Now that Don spilled the beans, we might just have to hear about your creek-crossing!

23 Nov 2009 3:00pm

@Tracy: I often don't want to talk about things that cause a lot of misery! I slipped on the rocks and fell into the creek. I did not have an extra pair of shoes so it was a cold trip for the next day walking around in wet shoes!

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

Exquisite, Scott. Stunning lines of water.

Wow - I love the water, and also the rocks in the upper left of the frame - great light on these and the vertical cracks are cool.
What happened on the creek crossing?

23 Nov 2009 8:28pm

@PD: I fell into the creek and had to walk in wet shoes for the rest of the trip!

i love the names we give things.
bliss, idaho, for one thng. i learned the closer a place is named to heaven, the closer to hell is is.
and grizzly falls. did somebody see a bear here taking a drink? enquiring minds want to know.

24 Nov 2009 6:03am

@Seraphine: Good point! I am not sure how grizzly falls came to be - there are a lot of bears in this area of the mountains! Bliss, Idaho does sound like it could be risky!

Will from Tokyo, Japan

Really nice shot, were you using an ND4 filter to accentuate the water flow? Really beautiful colours and composition.

24 Nov 2009 8:26am

@Will: Thanks for the comment - On this image it was taken in shadow - late afternoon/evening so it was low light and with a low iso setting and the aperture stopped down, I was able to get an exposure of up to 1" or more. No filter used for this image.

Marie LC from Voiron, France

Une photo à laquelle je vote 5***** sans la moindre hésitation. Très très beau rendu de l'eau en pose longue.

I sure know what you went through! Not long ago I fell in the water in Big Sur- No change of clothes- I drove to the Target in Monterey soaking wet & bought a change....I still wanted to shoot, and home was too far away! Now I always carry extras! :) Guess it's just part of the fun!!!
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!

25 Nov 2009 6:07am

bluechameleon from Vancouver, Canada

The long exposure is fantastic as the water seems to be falling in slow motion. The cool tones make this seem like a make-believe fantasy land. Love this one Scott.
