Totem Pole and the Yei Bi Chei rocksPosted by Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 27 June 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. Totem Pole and the Yei Bi Chei rocks show warm tones in the first light. I took this in the sand dune area fronting Totem Pole. This area is fantastic to wander through because there are so many possible compositions with a variety of foreground elements. The challenge is at first light you only have a few minutes before the bright sunlight begins to burn out the colors, so you have to work fast to capture several compositions. You made the right decision in having the sand dunes fronting the shot. The contrast between the dunes and sky set off the rock formations perfectly. Awesome lighting to bring it all together.... ;-) 27 Jun 2009 3:22pm ZoomLNZ from Los Angeles Area, United StatesThe foreground ridges almost come alive with movement and really compliment the rock formations. A beautiful shot. 27 Jun 2009 4:26pm Rand from Orem, United StatesGreat shot. Given some of the other shots you have posted, I wonder if you also made a B&W version. 27 Jun 2009 4:50pm @Rand: Rand, not yet but I will work on a few - thanks! B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United StatesAwesome. The texture of the rocks and pattern in the sand along with perfect exposure and composition make this shot another art lesson! 27 Jun 2009 10:12pm Tracy from La Selva Beach, United StatesBeautiful light! I really love the sand dune ripples in the foreground. This is a fascinating formation, it almost looks like it was chiseled to look that way! 28 Jun 2009 2:16am Don Smith from California, United StatesAnother awesome image Scott. Even though you had a blank blue sky, the image is successful on many fronts. You optimized the first light of the day to accentuate the ridges in the sand which in turn lead the eye to the totem pole and rocks which are bathed in warm reddish-orange light. The blue of the sky is the complimentary color to the warm tones so it does not jar the eye. Well done! 28 Jun 2009 1:20pm john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United StatesSuperb shot. Incredible detail and textures. 28 Jun 2009 2:47pm Suzanne from Huntington Bch, California, United StatesAwesome shot...so beautiful! 30 Jun 2009 4:52am Lesley from Lincoln, United StatesFive stars!
