Approaching NightPosted by Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 17 June 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. This was a photograph I took as we waited on the top of Sentinel Dome for the oncoming night and the opportunity to photograph star trails. At high elevations it seems that the light can remain for long periods of time prior to the onset of darkness. This photograph was taken a while after the sun had set and as I faced East the digital camera can do an amazing job of picking up the light. This was a longer exposure in the Bulb Mode and the camera was able to pick up very good detail on the distant mountain peaks and the foreground rocks. One of the challenges in this situation is trying to get focused because there is not enough light, so we were using flashlights and/or focusing manually in order to try and get a proper focus point for the image. Wonderful work. 17 Jun 2009 2:00pm Don Smith from California, United StatesI believe we as photographers need to explore the world more at this time of evening. You said it correctly that digital camera sensors can record "good detail" and also color that our eyes can no longer see at low illumination levels. And the best part is it all fits beautifully within the capture range of the sensor. Beautiful image! 17 Jun 2009 2:41pm ZoomLNZ from Los Angeles Area, United StatesThe blues and white crested mountailns seem to give the illusion of a turbulent and wavey sea.
