Teardrop Arch - Navajo Nation, ArizonaPosted by Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 15 June 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. I have seen many photos of this location and I wanted to see it for myself. I asked Carl, my very helpful guide, if we could make it to Teardrop Arch. He said no problem! It is interesting because you drive away from Monument Valley for about 4 or 5 miles to a nearby Mesa which looks back east. The drive also includes some good sandy washes that you go through as you climb up to the top of the mesa. As I was setting up to take this shot the clouds had shaded most of the area, including the view through the arch. I waited and was hoping for light to catch the distant buttes of Monument Valley. My wait was rewarded as I was able to capture the sunlight hitting some of the more well known features in the distance. In the center of the background you can see "The King on his Throne", "The Stagecoach", and the "Rabbit and the Bear" features. I was also fortunate to have some beautiful skies for this photograph. I shot this with my 70-200mm lens at 22 looking through the arch trying to get maximum clarity in the foreground arch and distant monuments. I WILL BE CO-TEACHING PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS IN 2012 AND 2013, AND PRIVATE INSTRUCTION IN YOSEMITE VALLEY! THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE YOUR VISION, SKILLS, AND TECHNIQUE!

@Don Smith: Don, yes you will need a guide to get to most of the areas outside of the roadway that is open to the public through Monument Valley. The rest of the area is Navajo Nation Tribal Property and from what I have read - I believe that they ask you not to go on it without a guide. |
