Yosemite Falls and the UniversePosted by Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 30 May 2009 in Landscape & Rural. A 25 minute night time exposure of Yosemite Valley with Yosemite Falls in the lower center. Taken from atop Sentinel Dome. The light to the north is from the Lake Tahoe Basin - shows in the lower right hand center portion. The light to the left hand side is from the Stockton/Sacramento area. It is amazing the distance that light pollution can be seen when you take a long exposure photograph! I should try this while in the countryside, far from Paris ! Wonderful spiraling stars ! 30 May 2009 5:21am K.B.R from SwitzerlandGreat photo very professional, worthy of a documentary about the universe. 30 May 2009 8:13am Judy from Brooksville, Florida, United StatesThis is fantastic, Scott; I love the golden light in the long exposure. 30 May 2009 12:44pm @Judy: Judy, thanks for the comments! On the stars moving - the earth is spinning on its axis - a line through the north/south pole as it orbits around the Sun. Very similar to a spinning top on a table. At night we can capture this motion by using a camera - and if we place the north star somewhere in the camera's view - we will see the center of this rotation - the North Star. This motion shows well with any open shutter time ranging from 15 minutes or longer - depending on wide angle vs. zoom. This was taken with a wide angle lens. You can see from this image that we are spinning pretty fast as we move through space - We do a full revolution on our Earth every 24 hours. Don Smith from California, United StatesI told you when I first saw this image - perfect composition! I like that you found this pine snag to the right of the falls and used it to create a sense of depth and scale. Also, you knew where Polaris was and positioned it perfectly in the top right quadrant. The image is perfectly balanced. Night (and extremely low light) photography is a frontier film could not tackle with any reliability. The beauty of night photography with digital's linear capture is no reciprocity concerns. Great work! 30 May 2009 1:58pm Tracy from La Selva Beach, United StatesWow Scott! This is so cool! I have never tried any night time stuff....Awesome! 30 May 2009 2:27pm Mariana from waterloo, CanadaFascinating ! Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United StatesIt's like two shots in one. The sky is interesting, but the bottom landscape could be a gorgeous photo by it self. Wow! 30 May 2009 3:29pm dkc from Xanthi, GreeceJust love star trails and I absolutely love this one...So greatly executed and achieving such beautiful light! 30 May 2009 9:53pm Jen from St. George, United StatesWOW!!! If I didn't know better I'd think this was too good to be true! It's just perfect! The light is amazing, and the stars are great. I've always wanted to try that, but haven't yet. What is casting the light on the falls and rocks? Amazing effect! It's just perfect. Oh, I already said that. Well, it is!! :) 31 May 2009 12:16am @Jen: Dear Jen thanks for the comment. The light on the walls of yosemite is due to the lighting from the hotel and yosemite village buildings Judy from Brooksville, Florida, United StatesThanks, Scott, for the 'review' on our spinning earth. I do understand that, but I'd never seen a photo like yours to demonstrate it. From my earlier comment, I guess I was figuring it out as I typed. <grin> 31 May 2009 9:12am zOOm from Paris, FranceBetween divine and fantastic ! I'm on my knees !
