Ajay from Pune, India

Amazing tonal range, Scott. The clouds look to close to the sea. Looks like a mysterious scene at the far horizon with those rays coming out of the clouds.

12 May 2009 2:47pm

@Ajay: Ajay, thanks for the comment - on the clouds - this storm was a cold Alaskan storm and the shower sections were very heavy with the clouds just about 1,000 to 1,500 feet above the ocean level.

Don Smith from California, United States

Beautiful image Scott, storm light and rugged coastlines evoke many emotions, you've captured this perfectly.

Ken from United States

Are squall lines dangerous? I keep thinking of that movie where there is a massive storm. Is it White Squall? and so I wondered?

12 May 2009 3:01pm

@Ken: Ken thanks for th e comments - not typically along the west coast - these however, were accompanied by hail and heavy downpours - I was hailed on a few minutes after this photograph was taken. However, usually not dangerous unless you get some lightning. However, If this squall line was approaching anywhere in the Midwest of the United States I would be climbing in my tornado cellar!

mo.langel from Courtelary, Switzerland

Excellent image!

12 May 2009 4:25pm

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

You are an excellent artist, Scott! I love this image, what a treatment, specially in the rocks and waves.

zOOm from Paris, France

What an impressive landscape Scott, so dramatic with this beautiful sky ! Incredible rendering as well... HDR ?

12 May 2009 5:09pm

@zOOm: As with most photos I take I always bracket them so that I can capture the cloud details - so I did not do HDR in the typical sense - usually using Photomatix - I used Photoshop CS4 and masked in the darker sky section from the photograph to capture the cloud details - However, this is a much more difficult process and time consuming - but I think I get better clarity in the end.

martie from somewhere, United States

Love this one! The hard rocks, dark stormy sky and the water breaking on the rocks - especially the blue bit! Just perfect!

ZoomLNZ from Los Angeles Area, United States

I just purchased Photomatix Pro but I haven't yet tried it out. Images such as this really inspire me to learn the art of HDR photography. Your work is excellent.

12 May 2009 8:24pm

@ZoomLNZ: Thanks for the comment - another method in this type of situation - is creating an HDR using a ND split grad nuetral density filter (you can use a hard or soft edge) in front of the lens and that saves all of the processing time - I used to use these a lot also, but I kept dropping them.

B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United States

Wonderful texture and pattern on the rocks. I'm thinking you must really get your exercise getting to some of the places you shoot from!
