The Veteran - Old Cypress

Posted by Scott F. Schilling (San Martin, United States) on 5 April 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This old tree is know as the Veteran Cypress - this tree is estimated to be about 300 years old and at the end of its life. To think about the age of this tree - you realize that this tree may have seen the Grizzly Bear, or the Brown Bear roam these parts, the indians, the Spaniards, and then modern America with planes flying overhead. I am amazed as I think about the number of sunrises and sunsets it has lived through, the storms and winds. It is interesting as you study photography, and learn, and attempt to work on compositions, frame subjects, try to create something visually pleasing from what we see around us - often you go back and old photos take on new life. I took a photograph of this Cypress over a year ago. I could never work on it because I did not like the composition I had taken. As I have learned a little bit more, just a little, I worked on it and I felt that I was able to compose a photograph that expressed what I felt while looking at the tree. An amazing tree!

Desperately climging on, refusing to fall. An amazing and beautiful photograph Scott, with a feeling of the tree having a life of it's own, almost fairytale like in appearance. The history it has witnessed, the changing world. If only it could talk

Wow!!! I simply love the density of the forest. It's sad to see though the this beautiful tree's roots are loosing their grip on the land.

Hi Scott, hard to accept that this tree is nearing the end of its life. It reminds me of the old Jeffrey Tree atop Sentinel Dome, eventually life takes its toll on all living things. Nice that we can document it and preserve its memories for generations to come.

It's sad that the soil beneath it has been washed away, and a wonder that it has lived as long as it has.
Whatever cropping and processing you did worked wonders, Scott, as this is now a treasure!
Now I know of two named Cypress, The Veteran and the Lone Cypress (which we've seen).

This is a great shot. I have a problem with posting trees also. I am not sure why I cannot get then to shine on the screen just they do in a real life situation. You did a wonderful job with this one. So sad to see it go.
